Walter E. Heyse, M.D. age 90, of Valley City, beloved husband for over 60 years of the late Emily (nee Helwig) passed away on Nov. 24, 2019. Loving father of Fred, Rachel (Jacob) Martin, Paul (Diana), Albert (Nancy) and Arthur (Annmarie). Grandchildren: Alexander (Heather) de la Pena, Anthony (Paula) de la Pena, Alyssa de la Pena, Jessica (Adam) Wunderle, Rebecca Heyse, Erich Heyse, Miles Heyse, Erin Heyse and Lauren Heyse. Great grandsons: Lucas Wunderle, Henry Wunderle, Oliver de la Pena and Landon de la Pena. Brother: Herbert (Mary) Heyse. Brother/sister-in-law: Jim (Gail) Helwig (both deceased).

He was born June 18, 1929 at the old Fairview Hospital at W. 32nd and Franklin Blvd., the son of the late Dr. Fred and Gertrude (nee Martienssen) Heyse. He was a 1947 graduate of Cuyahoga Heights High School and 1951 graduate of Capital University where he first met Emily. They started dating in 1950 and were married July 4, 1953 at Peace Lutheran Church in Gahanna, Ohio.  Walter and Emily enjoyed traveling, visiting all over the country, Canada and made trips to Europe. Dr. Heyse spent the majority of his youth growing up in Brooklyn Heights. He ran distance for the track teams at both Cuyahoga Heights and Capital and is a former school record-holder in the mile for the Redskins under hall of fame coach Ralph Adams.  Heyse earned his doctoral degree of medicine in 1955 at Ohio State. He did his internship at Charity Hospital (1955-56), surgical residency at University Hospitals (1957-60). Dr. Heyse served as a lieutenant commander for the United States Navy Reserve for 14 years, including two years active duty from 1960-62 at Parris Island, South Carolina.  He practiced medicine as an orthopedic surgeon for the medical staffs of Parma, Deaconess and Southwest hospitals from 1962-94 and a founding partner of Southwest Orthopedics.  Dr. Heyse was known for generously distributing Bazooka and Double bubble gum to patients and staff.

Dr. Heyse was a member of the Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Mid America Orthopedic Association, Ohio Orthopedic Association, Cleveland Orthopedic Association, Diplomat American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and Fellow American College of Surgeons. He was an alumni association member of three universities.
Dr. Heyse was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Valley City. His volunteer activities included: Cleveland Lutheran Children’s Aid Society (12 years), Cleveland City Hospital clinical instructor for the department of orthopedic surgery (9 years) and Altenheim Board of Trustees for (7 years).

Dr. Heyse purchased several parcels of land in Valley City beginning in 1966 in which he and his family developed into Fred’s Tree Farm, a cut-your-own Christmas tree farm which began sales operations in 1980 and still continues.

He also had a deep pride for his family’s German heritage. Since 1955 Dr. Heyse was a member of Schlaraffia, a worldwide German-speaking society.  He was an Ehren Ritter (honorary knight/member) for the Cleveland chapter plus total of 14 other Schlaraffia branches in the U.S. plus several in Germany.  He played flughorn in the brass band Donauschwaben Blaskapelle for 15 years at Lenau Park.

Calling hours- 5:00-9:00PM Monday, Dec. 2, 2019 at the Bauer Funeral Home, Valley City. A viewing will be held at the church prior to the service from 9:00-10:00 AM Funeral Service- 10:00 AM, Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1377 Lester Road Valley City. Rev. Philip Zielinski, officiating.

Burial will be at Myrtle Hill Cemetery, Valley City, with Full Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials be made to Habit for Humanity, St. Paul Church or HMC Hospice of Medina County.
