Virgil S. Koppes

Virgil S. Koppes, 90, of Medina, Ohio passed away peacefully into his heavenly home on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.

Virgil was born in Seville, Ohio on July 4, 1932 to the late John and LaVonne (Coolman) Koppes.  He was a 1950 graduate of Wadsworth High School, 1954 graduate of The Ohio State University and received his Master’s degree from Kent State University. Virgil proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in the 10th Mountain Division.

Virgil had been a Vo-Ag teacher at Buckeye High School for 32 years.  After he retired in 1989, he was employed as a consultant at the Medina County Educational Service Center and he taught horticultural at the Grafton Prison for 5 years.

He was a charter member of the Buckeye Up & Coming Farm Council (1967), a member of the Medina County Farm Bureau and numerous other organizations. He was inducted into the Buckeye Hall of Fame in 2016.

Virgil was a very active and devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church, Valley City. He was a dedicated member of the Akron Derby Town Chorus and numerous barbershop quartets for 54 years.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Esther (Kemrite) married for59 years; children, Jeffery (Dalia) Koppes, Kenneth (Angie) Koppes and Susan (Clarence) Gill.  Grandchildren, Alec Koppes, Jordan and Joshua Koppes. Also, survived by a sister, Miriam Taylor, many nieces and nephews and 3 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a grandson, Collin Koppes and a brother Roger Koppes.

Calling hours will from 3:00-7:00 PM, Monday, July 25, 2022 in the gathering area of Zion Lutheran Church 2233 Abbeyville Road, Valley City, with the Funeral Service to be held Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Jim Watson, officiating. Burial will follow in Zion Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
