Frederick Harvey Gern, 85, died on Thursday, November 6, 2025 in Medina, Ohio.
Fred was born January 16, 1940 in Doylestown, Ohio to Frederick and Hazel Gern. He spent most of his childhood in Chippewa Lake, where his parents owned the service station in town. The youngest of three by 16 years, Fred had two older sisters, Alice and Mae. Growing up in that area is where he developed a love for fishing and is what sparked his interest in Chippewa Lake history which continued throughout his life.
He graduated from Medina High School in 1958 before going on to serve in the United States Marine Corp as a private. A hard worker, Fred held several different jobs before working at Permold Inc., where he continued working for 31 years before the business closed its doors.
Fred was a lifetime member of both the Medina Eagles and the Medina Moose. He enjoyed shooting pool and his family lovingly remembers him as “an avid gambler”.
Fred loved playing all kinds of card games-from Uno to poker. He also enjoyed
collecting coins, and watching wrestling and westerns. With a great sense of humor, perhaps his favorite thing was making people laugh with a silly joke.
Fred met the love of his life, Harriet (Kemp), in 1960 when he took her to her senior prom. They married September 28, 1963 and together raised three children: Anthony, Brenda and Kristina. With Harriet, Fred began attending Zion Lutheran Church in Valley City, where he became an active member.
He leaves behind the following to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 62 years, Harriet; children Anthony Gern (Jackie Mills), Brenda (Scott) Hoovler and Kristina May (Rick King); grandchildren, Dustin, Jeffery and Jacob Pearson, Amber, Carolyn (Kyle Kerley), and Chester May; great grandchildren, Tanashia and Charles Foster, Betty and Teresa Setser; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 14, 2025 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2233 Abbeyville Road Valley City, Ohio 44280.
