Helen M. Schaefer, 95, of Valley City passed away peacefully into her heavenly home, Wednesday, July 17, 2019. Helen was born in Akron, Ohio on July 13, 1924 to the late Christopher and Pauline (nee Durbin) Swingle. A graduate of Liverpool High School, she has resided in Medina County since the age of 14. Helen was a very devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She tirelessly cared and cheered for her seven children during their very active years at Buckeye Local Schools, where she also worked as secretary from 1968-1991. She showed the same enthusiasm to her dozens of grand and great grandchildren making sure they knew that every poem, dance routine and piece of art was "Wonderful!" Helen enjoyed line dancing, working in her yard and flower beds and baking delicious pies, cakes and cookies for every occasion. Never one to sit still, she was engaged in family reunions, sporting events, recitals and other activities displaying her love, pride and support until it was time for her to rest. Helen was an active member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Valley City, serving at their annual dinners and in the Altar & Rosary Society and Infant of Prague Society. She is survived by her children- Jerry (Ginny), Peggy Ryel, Janet (Craig) Haneberg, Jeff (Eileen Mollica), Dale (Joanne), Tim (Debbie) and Pam (Tom) Kruse; 17 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Charles Swingle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Schaefer, in 1992; son-in-law Roy Ryel; brothers Francis, Donald, John & Paul Swingle; and her sister Margaret Cuyler. Funeral Mass: 11:00 AM, Weds. July 24, 2019 at St. Martin of Tours Chapel, 1800 Station Road Valley City, OH. Visitation: Weds. From 9:00-10:45 AM in the Gathering Area of St. Martin Church.
